Cheaper Gas and Electric Bills

  • November 10, 2009 7:43 am

I think not….Reports in all the papers today allude that homes in the UK should brace themselves for steep increases in their fuel bills, Britain’s energy regulator warned last night. Ofgem went onto say they feared a crisis in Russian gas supplies will ‘push up prices’ in the next few years.

The warning will worry thousands of households, particularly pensioners who are often forced to choose between heating and food, and families with young children who cannot afford to keep warm in the winter months.

The average gas and electricity bill, known as ‘dual fuel’, has more than doubled in the past five years from £580 to £1,240 a year – an increase of nearly 115 per cent.

Last night, Industry experts said: ‘Gas scarcity in Europe could push up prices for British consumers and they urged customers to look at new authorised distributors like www.betterbills.net and others. He said “ In today’s toughening market place consumers must look towards both using less and shopping around for their energy “ He went on to mention that savings of 20% were not uncommon and customers now have a wide range of products and services available to them.

The Citizens Advice Bureau has already reported a sharp rise in the number of households contacting it for help. Between May and September, the number of those with ‘fuel debts’ jumped nearly 50 per cent compared to the same period last year. Chief executive David Harker said the figures are particularly worrying because winter has not even started.

David Hunter, an analyst at the energy consultancy McKinnon & Clarke, warned that millions of families are facing a nightmare battle to pay their fuel bills if they climb even higher.’The long-term future for energy bills is that they are going to cost more and more,’ he said.

‘People who are already struggling to pay the bills should be paying less, not more. Any future rises are going to be very difficult.’ He also called for the ‘Big Six’ energy firms – including British Gas and Scottish Power – immediately to cut their annual bills by £120. . Despite wholesale prices for gas and electricity more than halving over the last year, energy giants have only passed on modest cuts and are reliant on their customers not leaving.

Times are hard and customers are starting to see the light but the big utility companies seem to be only interested in the bottom Line.

UK only pls – How to change Gas/Electricity suppliers?

  • November 29, 2009 4:34 pm

This may sounds like a stupid question, but this is the first time I have lived on my own. I currently receive my gas and electric from British Gas, but I’m sure I could find another provider that is cheaper. How do I go about changing? Do I phone around for quotes, how do I copare them? Any recommendations? Is it easy to switch over? As I live in a shared ownership home would i need to consult the housing association before switching suppliers? Advice would be much appreciated!

Check a site like http://www.uswitch.com for comparisons. You’ll need to put in your current supplier, tariff and bill to get the most accurate comparisons.

When you’ve chosen, just write your meter readings down, and ring up your preferred supplier. You might even be able to do it on the Internet these days, but I personally prefer to talk to someone and hear them confirm that I’ve been switched over.

Good luck!

Why is it that WINTER Electricity Bills are high than SUMMER?

  • November 29, 2009 4:34 pm

Of course we use HEATERS, what I mean is our 1,600kWh consumption this winter cost highier than a 1,600kWh during summer?
To schwildcat1977 : Yes the consumption is the same with that certain month last summer, since heatwave hits California so were always turning on the aircon. I lost the detailed charges of that month, only the total consumption so I can’t compare.

I work for an electric company. In all states electric companies are allowed to recover the cost of the fuel used to provide the power. If the power plants in your service area are natural gas feed, you’ll see a higher jump in the winter than in the summer. Its the result of supply and demand. If the plants use coal, you should see a pretty stable cost over the year. A number of states this year experienced a hugh jump in electrical cost because rate controls expired, you might be in one of those states.

If your electric company had several power plants down for maintence this winter, they may be buying power from other companies and that is always more expensive than producing it "yourself".

If you use the same number of kw in both months, the cost difference is in the cost of the fuel and the service fees to deliver the power to your house, and any rate increases in the last 6-8 months.

What is cheaper gas or electricity to run a home. Does it matter the state or area?

  • November 29, 2009 4:34 pm

Does it also matter how hot I keep the water heater? Using small appliances, electric.

It depends on where you live and what the climate is. Generally speaking, the more moderate the climate the price will be cheaper with electricity. The colder the climate, the better off you are with gas. You also have to consider that the price of gas fluctuates much more than electricity.

How come a Daisy Rock Rock Candy Cosmic Purple electric guitar is cheaper?

  • November 29, 2009 4:34 pm

On Musicians Friend and Guitar Center, i was searching Daisy Rock Guitars and i found the one i wanted, which was the Rock Candy series and i am stuck between cosmic purple and atomic pink. What i noticed was the Cosmic Purple was so much cheaper!! I was wondering why, if it was because it wasn’t as good in quality or if it didn’t look that well or something. Please help me? I really need to know :P

Hi there,

I worked for Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, so I can definitely answer your question! :-) The reason you are finding the Cosmic Purple finish for a lower price is most likely due to the fact that it is a discontinued item for our 2009 season. Since we are no longer making that model, music stores tend to lower the prices on those type of models to make room for our newest models. It’s the exact same instrument as the Atomic Pink with the same great quality!

Hope this helps!

I want to change my combined electricity and gas supplier……………EDF, powergen or Npower???

  • November 28, 2009 1:42 pm

I am currently with Southern Electric but they keep overestimating my bils and have now put their prices up (again!!). I have looked on various websites and have found EDF, Powergen and Npower to be the cheapest in my area, however all of these have a low customer rating. I read a story about powergen billing people who are on pre-pay meters but i wanted to know what experiences you have all had with these suppliers???

Many thanks!
I have checked prices on LOTS of websites, what i want to find is the BEST supplier out of the three, ie customer satisfaction, etc, etc,

I am with Npower and they are great. I used to be with British gas and you would not believe the hassle I had with them.

Npower are clear and concise and easy to deal with. I have on line information and dd payments for both. I can take reading myself and give them over the Internet to save having estimated bills all the time.. If I need to call them its a British person based in Britain I speak to (Not that I have anything against the other way its just I find the accent difficult and prefer to back our economy)
Hope this helps Michelle from Northamptonshire..

do the sun and moon have to pay for their light electricity bills?

  • November 28, 2009 1:42 pm

they have been giving us light for the past thousand years, I wonder if they need to pay their bills too, like we do?

They get a subsidy, the lucky thing.

Are electricity rates really cheaper at night?

  • November 28, 2009 1:42 pm

I’ve always heard this from people but I never belived it. It seems like a myth to me. Thier explanation is that less people are using power from the grid so its cheaper. I always thought the power companies always charged a flat rate per kilo watt hour. Which is it?? Thanks!

It depends on your electric utility.

Most offer "time of use" (TOU) rates for commercial/industrial customers, but some also offer it to residential customers.

Historically the cost to electricity is cheaper during the night because of the laws of supply and demand. During the day the loads are higher and extra generators are brought "on-line" to meet the demand. In the middle of the night loads are lower and they need to throttle back the generators.

Generating stations that use steam turbines do not like to ramp the loads up and down. That causes extra wear and tear on the equipment. In the case of nuclear plants, they’re designed to run "flat-out" until the next refueling outage.

To avoid reducing load, generating stations are willing to sell their "off-peak" energy for little more than the cost of fuel.

To encourage customers to shift their usage patterns to use "off-peak" energy, these TOU rates provide substantial discounts for usage during nights (and in some cases weekends).

The next extension of this is "real time pricing" were the cost of electricity is dynamically changing every hour throughout the day. This requires a more sophisticated electric meter that records your usage for each hour of the month. Computer programs apply the hourly costs of electricity to your usage and generate the bills. Depending on your usage patterns, these "market based" rates can save a substantial amount of money (20+%)compared to traditional flat rates.

Call your local electric company and ask them about time-of-use or real-time-pricing rates that might be available.
