The Beatles- Because

  • June 30, 2011 2:44 pm

One of the best examples of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison’s harmonizing, Because.

The song begins with electric harpsichord played by George Martin and then joined by Lennon’s guitar doubling the harpsichord and played through a Leslie speaker. Vocals and bass guitar enter in what Alan Pollack calls the “mini-bridge.”

The song was one of the few Beatles songs to include an analog synthesizer arrangement (although analog keyboards such as the Mellotron had been used often by The Beatles, few songs featured the use of a traditional analog synthesizer with voltage-controlled oscillators). The Beatles at the time of Abbey Road were among the first contemporary rock bands to experiment with the Moog synthesizer (the first, or at least the first to chart on the top 40, had been The Monkees).

According to Lennon, “Because” was inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”. “Yoko was playing Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ on the piano … I said, ‘Can you play those chords backwards?’, and wrote ‘Because’ around them. The lyrics speak for themselves … No imagery, no obscure references.”

The main recording session for “Because” was on 1 August 1969, with vocal overdubs on 4 August, and a Moog synthesizer overdub by George Harrison on 5 August. As a result, this was the last song on the album to be committed to tape, although there were still overdubs for other incomplete songs.

A vocals-only version of the song can be found on Anthology 3 and Love and is an example of three part harmony from Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, although the latter is slowed down and includes quiet nature sound effects. Both versions include the ‘Ahh’ at the beginning. This song appears in the movie “American Beauty” where it is dramatically placed right after the last words of the film.

Is it cheaper to buy electricity from the supermarket, and if so, how do i carry it home?

  • June 24, 2011 8:39 pm

Do i need a special airtight container?

You get a stick from the person you bought the house of, or you can get it fitted in. It’s like USB stick you then hand it to the supermarket checkout person and ask how much you want put on it. You then put credits on the stick which you then put in a box in your house which you should have installed by someone. I think that’s how it works anyway, whether it’s cheaper or not I don’t know …

electric prepayment meter to a standard meter?

  • June 13, 2011 4:52 pm

i have just had my electric meter changed from a prepayment meter to a standard meter and paying by direct debits the thing is my direct debits are higher than what i was paying before will i have to continue paying the direct debits up to 12 months before they put credit back into my account or will a energy supplier make the adjustments in the coming months has any one had their meter changed and what advise could you give me please

I had mine changed about 6 years ago.

With a prepayment meter, there’s a very limited choice of companies and tariffs available – generally these are far more expensive than paying by direct debit. Most likely you will be on a standard tariff – these are usually the most expensive, but now you’ve ditched the prepayment meter you should have far more choice available. Electricity varies from about 13p per unit to 8.5p per unit so look around. Some suppliers have standing charges and some don’t.

Most people use more electric in the winter than the summer – direct debits are usually evened out throughout the year, so in summer you may pay for more then you use and in winter it can be less.

If you have old bills you can check your previous usage, but only actual meter readings are meaningful – estimates are not.

I used to prefer to pay a little too much for the direct debit – it’s a bit like a savings account or gives a bit of a breather for harder times. You do get either the money back or the reduced bills eventually and it’s better than being asked for extra money later.

After a couple of months it might be worth reading your meter then phoning the electric company to see about adjusting the direct debit if you’re not happy. They may be trying to build up a bit of credit in your account.

I want to know what will be cheaper on electricity ?

Ok l just moved into this new place and it has the central air conditioner already throughout the house But l turned it on for a good day and it wasn’t really cooling up the place so l was wondering since l bought 3 new air conditioners in my old place and didn’t know there was central air until l saw the place l want to now what will be cheaper on electricity ? Central air or a window unit

It depends on a lot of different factors. For example, if you central air is not cooling right, you may have an issue with its age, efficiency or amount of coolant. You really should get that checked first.

If the house is large and has 2 stories, that will be a big factor. It will take a lot of central air to cool 2 stories, especially the upstairs, unless you have "zone" thermostats.

Finally, how many rooms of the house do you actually USE? And how cool do you need them to be? If you can deal with a warm house but want a cool bedroom to sleep in, the window AC and some fans should be enough and would be most efficient. But if you use the entire house – a lot – and need it to be relatively cool throughout, then the 3 room ACs probably will not do the job for you and the central air would be more effecient. As long as you get it working RIGHT.
