Can British Gas increase my Direct debit by over 50%?

  • December 19, 2009 12:19 am

What a con, my gas and electricity are with BG.
My Gas DD was £35 per month, most of our appliances are electric and the electric DD was £67 per month. No outstanding bills. In Sept they increased to £68 Gas & £145 Electric per month.
They did not inform me in writing, I was so disgusted that I cancelled both DDs and decided that I will pay when they send the bills.
I am over paid by £119 on the gas but they have sent 3 letters this week.
First stating that my electric bill is £178 over due, this was not the bill as I have not had one. Fine if that’s what it is then I will pay it. BUT I received a Second stating that I owe them £317 and the bill is two months overdue then a Third stating that if I do not pay my supply will be cut off on 11 November 1111 !! 3 years time.
Tried ringing cant get through, so now Im writing.
Then I will be changing supplier.
Has anyone else had these kind of problems.

Write to the ombudsman, can be found in the yellow pages or through Citizens Advice Bureau they are very good at threatening to cut people off and whacking up the bill when it suits them, make sure you take meter readings and pass them on to British Gas to make sure they are only billing you for what you have used. Even if you’re in dispute with them you won’t be able to change supplier and they may even screw up your credit rating just to stop you moving, the direct debit guarantee says that they must inform you of any difference in payments at least ten days before it is due, if they didn’t contact your bank and they will refund you. They only seem to answer the phone when it suits them and they never do what they say they are going to do. Good Luck i don’t think they’re very British at all

  • December 17, 2009 7:41 pm

i have a small catering unit in garage conversion at home here in the uk, 3 phase is way out of my price range and i need a bigger oven i have a 3 phase one that is 7kw per phase and i can get it converted to single phase it is 4 deck and if i had all decks on ive been told it would need a 72 amp supply yet the whole house/garage is on a 60 amp main fuse, would the electric supplier up my supply and change the amps or would a 3 phase generator be better or maybe an inverter, the oven itself is a tom chandley convection oven and has no motors or blowers just top and bottom heating elements thanks to all the yahoo expert users who answer the questions

your electrical service needs to be updated unfortunately it is at your cost

what are the best options for gas and electric. key? Monthly bill? What company. UK Please?

  • December 16, 2009 10:22 am

At current I am on a top up key meter for electric and gas. With constantly changing energy prices I can not seem to find what the best supplier and/or Tariff for my household would be. I also fear one of those much heard about £700 gas bills.
Do you recommend I stay with top-up or do you truly save by going on a monthly tariff?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Please note that I am in the UK, so regional answers please :)
I have looked online and get so many conflicting answers that now it just makes no sense!

It will depend on where you live but pay as you go are always the most expensive tariffs so there will definitely be savings if you switch.
If you don’t want scary bills, monthly payments based on average usage may be your best option.
It will be useful but not essential if you can contact your current supplier and ask them what your last 12 months power consumption has been.
Then use the link below to get a realistic idea.

pre payment gas and electric meters?

  • December 15, 2009 6:09 am

i have recently moved to a three bedroom home…the gas and electric r on pre-payment meters..i am with n power and they are costing me a fortune to have them changed to pay monthly or direct debit etc…i will get charged and cnt really afford it at the moment

is any1 else using them? how much are you putting on weekly and what amount of usage are you getting for your money? best suppliers?

DON’T PAY FOR A METER EXCHANGE!!!

Tell Npower that you will change suppliers if they don’t do it for free. If they don’t agree, call EDF Energy on 0800 0969000 who will take your supply over and do the exchange (gas and elec) completely free of charge.

In the meantime, have you rang Npower to see if there is any debt on the meter from the previous occupant? That could be the reason it’s costing you a fortune…

Cheapest possible way is to go Dual Fuel Direct Debit. Have a look on www.uswitch.com, pop your details in, and it’ll give you a rundown of just how much money you can save!

Anyone with EDF Energy know what the minimum you can put on a pre-payment electric meter is once you are….?

£0.25 in the emergency? I’ve just put on £6 like I used to with my previous supplier, and nothing has changed – it still says: £0.25E
It’s a Siemens Meter. And DISP R. (after pressing the blue button several times) says £6 E.C which I would imagine means it’s been accepted. But the main display still says £0.25. I just need to know whether it will run out tonight, and if I need to put any more on.
Yes, it’s a key meter, not a smart-card type

What type of meter – a smart card meter or one which uses a coloured plastic key? My hubby works for a meter company and says you should be in credit now but tell me the meter type and he may be able to help further. It’s not his meter co but he says if it were then this is what to do (they may work similarly). Clear however much of the EMC you have used plus minimum of £1 (which it sounds like you have done). You may have a large DRR or your meter is faulty – most meters do not disconnect between 7pm and 7am (as customer centres are closed) and you’d be stuffed with no leccy! Some have non disconnect the whole weekend so sounds like you should be OK. Good luck.

this is a question requiring a yes or no reply. please read it . will you .?

Briefly . Stopped in street. asked to change suppliers for gas and electric. Said ok. … got home changed mind. rang to cancel. 3 months later found out being charged by 2 companies for one lot of gas and electric. long story. furious. Will you tell me that the next time you are stopped by someone while shopping to agree to anything will you please run a mile. ( That is if you don`t already do so.) Please.

that exact same thing happened to me, i got stung by EDF energy for £191 last week when I’ve been with British gas for a year! i did the same thing as you, i said i would change then i decided to cancel straight away. by the time it got sorted it had already went through to the debt collection agency, the b@st@rds

finding out who my previous supplier was before i switched to n power. how doi go about it?

  • December 11, 2009 2:50 pm

i have been with npower for 3 years now and i had a prepayment meter card when i joined them. i had my meters changed to quarterly 2 years ago . i managed to get a refund of£90 on my gas and was told they were trying to trace a missing payment on my electric card. i forgot about it untill today and wondered if anyone knows what i can do? not even sure what my account number was

Can’t NPower help? They should have a record of who they were liaising with at the time of the changeover.

OnStream electric meter change?

  • December 8, 2009 6:28 pm

Hi I realise this is not the most fantastically interesting question for a Friday afternoon but….just got a letter saying my electric meter is being exchanged for a new ‘smart’ or OnStream one. Does this mean that the new meter will start at Zero?
By some magic power I have paid no electricity since June since I switched suppliers (I am hopefully lost in the big computers at British Gas) and if this new meter starts at zero and the old one is defunct I am really hoping that will wipe my usage history and it means they can’t backdate bill me when they finally workout I’ve never paid them a penny!
Thanks
Josephine

I’ve just had mine changed yesterday and they just transfer the amount from your old meter to your new one.

So if i were you huni I’d find that key, dust it off and leg it to the shop with a fiver and get something on it!

If you’ve got the old meter on a rig i’d take that out before the engineer turns up. They tend to get a bit stroppy about things like that.

As for a bill i wouldn’t worry about it too much they did exactly the same thing about 10 years ago in my old flat. I had the same problem as you and never heard anything.

But then i did put some money on the meter just before they came round so there was no reason to question it i suppose.

Good luck hun.

Changing to quartly gas bills?

  • December 7, 2009 8:33 am

I was on quarterly gas bills with Southern Electric but run up a £500 bill so they suggested to be put on a pre paid meter and pay £10 a week off my debt. Im a single parent on benefits and Im getting into more trouble with money just trying to pay the £10 a week off plus having enough spare money to have the gas on to heat the house. Summer was ok but now the winter is coming Im having to put £30 a week on the meter just to have the heating on for a couple of hours!!!
Can I change gas supplier and get them to take the meter out and pay monthly bills? Or can I ask Southern Electric to put me back on bills and take the meter out?
Any help appreicated

If you settle the bill with Southern, you can then switch to another company with monthly bills…

I have been with the same company for around 7 years and never switched. My last bill (October) was £85.00 and that covers my Gas, electric, telephone, broadband and a freephone number, plus a mobile line rental (but dont really use it)…

They have some great incentives at the moment i.e £100 discount for new customers etc. Plus they have a unique customer discount plan which helps reduce my bill every month…

Let me know if you require any further info… Good Luck !

Oh, meant to add… We live in a 3 bedroom semi detatched with central heating, gas oven etc.

High, Medium or Low User/Usage Gas and Electric ?

  • December 6, 2009 12:54 am

I have been trying to get a quote for gas and electric but I feel like I’m talking to a brick wall with all the companies. The deal is the last tenants were basically squatters so they have no gas or electric supply. No one knows who the electric is supplied by and I found out that British Gas supply the gas so thats no problem but they will not let me change to another supplier until I find out the current one so does anyone know how I can find that out please? And the intended question is on these quote sites because I don’t have the previous bills I can’t put the khw or price from previous bills so I always use the high, medium and low usage option but I don’t know which one I necessarily fall under. I live in a one bedroom flat so would that be low or medium usage?? I just can’t find anything anywhere online that breaks it down into english…

Google MPAN or MPAS on internet.

These people have alist of all gas / electricity suppliers to a particular meter point reference.

Sorry I don’t have number to hand as not in work, but will have this problem all the time.
