what is cheaper to run? an electric garage heater or a natural gas garage heater?

  • November 28, 2009 1:42 pm

I have a 3 car garage that I am planning to keep heated this winter. which will be cheaper in the long run as far as energy costs. I have already insulated the garage and the doors.

Wow, I’m not trying to be argumentative, but at least in my area Electric heat is much cheaper than gas. In fact I’m getting ready to replace my 80,000 lp furnace with 18 KW of electric.

I’m not sure what your per KW rate is in your area, but you definitely want to measure out both types and do a calculation before you decide. Call your utility companies and ask them the rates per measured unit of energy that they charge.

As I said, here in Indiana, electricity beats gas hands down.

Is it cheaper to heat one room with an electric space heater or the whole house with central gas furnace?

  • November 27, 2009 1:29 pm

I have a 3 bedroom house with a modern central heat/ac. The central heat is a new 3 burner/ton gas furnace by Lennox. I live in an area where daytimes are comfortable but evenings are cold and I have been using an electric space heater to keep the room I sleep in warm at night. I know there are many variables, but assuming everything is average (average size home, bed room, insulation, etc) would it be cheaper to heat only one room with the more expensive electricity or the entire house with the cheaper natural gas?

Heat the one room.

Is it cheaper to run an electric heater or my home’s gas heating system?

  • November 26, 2009 8:18 am

We are new homeowners and this is our first winter. Our gas bill is getting pretty high. My husband wants to keep the thermostat down and plug in our electric heater (left over from our apartment days). I think that will just cost more money. Thoughts?

The cost difference varies but I have never seen gas more expensive than electric. My current bills make electric 4 times dearer. You may have to convert the units if they don’t put it on the bill. One decatherm (gas) is about 293 units (electric).

Your husband may be correct if you heat one room with electric, it may be cheaper than heating the whole house with gas even at 4:1 cost. Assuming you have doors to prevent heat loss from the room.

Which is cheaper for a house electric or natural gas? And on your bill?

Buying a house and was wondering if natural gas, propane or electric was the way to go.

We use gas in our house and it is much more expensive than many people I know who use electric. In the winter our bills for gas were close to 500 a month (we do have an old house that is big).

When are Electric cars going to get cheaper, So everyone can get one?

  • November 22, 2009 12:54 am

You know they have the gas-electric cars but when are they going to make one so indepent of gas…Maybe it could be natural gas and eletric..Natural Gas is cheaper the petrolum gas.

Hold your breath — it could be as soon as next year. Look at this imported Chinese car:
*

*
It gets 200 miles to the charge, does freeway speeds, and only costs $28,500.
*
These are the batteries in the car:
*

http://www.everspring.net/product-battery.htm

*
If the chart on this page is correct, 1100 charges times 200 miles per charge mean that the batteries are good for 220,000 miles before replacement!
*
You also should consider how the fuel savings from driving an electric vehicle could afford you a more expensive car. In my city, we have a special electric rate if I charge overnight, of only 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. An EV gets about 4 miles per KWH. For the 1300 miles per month I drive, that’s just a little over EIGHT DOLLARS. In my 18mpg gas-powered sedan, with gas at $3.10, that would be $224 per month! That means I can pay at least $200 more per month in a car payment, and not even notice it. Maintenance is much cheaper, too, because electric motors are maintenance-free (no oil changes, coolant, spark plugs, etc.)
*
Powering an EV is so much cheaper because of the vastly greater efficiency with which fuel is used. Sending energy by wire is much more efficient than sending fuel by truck, for instance. Improved efficiency also means far less pollution, even when dirty fuel is burned by power plants.

Can anyone tell me if diesel/petrol generated electric is cheaper than my power supplier, SWALEC, in the UK?

  • November 20, 2009 11:26 pm

I am looking to save money on the electric/gas bill this winter and am considering a diesel generator to supply domestic power at 240 volts.
Is this practical?

Home made electricity from a generator is more expensive than that from a supplier. They get huge bulk discount on fuel and their equipment is way more efficientt.

But, and this is quite a big but.. if you also use a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use the engine cooling system to heat your house, you win hands down. Think of it as either sightly more expensive electricity and free heating, or slightly more tricky heating and free electricity.

Which is cheaper? Gas or electric oven?

  • November 19, 2009 10:51 pm

I have a gas oven but an electric one in the garage… will it be cheaper for me to have electric than gas?

Gas will always be cheaper to run. They use gas to make electricity so per unit of energy the gas will be cheaper. However if your gas oven is poorly insulated and door doesnt seal well then I guess you need to take this into account but as far as cheapness the gas will be cheaper.
I cook professionally and to be honest both types have their merits and disadvantages – I prefer to use an electric oven but a gas hob at home – gas hob is more controllable and instantly changeable, the electric oven is more stable and even.
Make sure your gas oven is well maintained and the burner burns evenly check the manual.

Is an electric heat/water pump cheaper than a furnace?

  • November 17, 2009 10:46 am

Is it cheaper to run an electric water pump or a furnace?

heat water/pump. not sure what that is but I know what a heat pump is. If that whats your talking about thean the answer is well…yes and no. depending on cost of gas and electric typical a heat pump is better to run for heat as along as its above freezing outside. It will still work and put out heat all winter but it won’t be much heat for what your paying for, at which point your better with gas heat.
