The Beatles – In My Life 1965

“In My Life” is a song by The Beatles written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song originated with Lennon, and while McCartney contributed to the final version, the extent of his contribution is in dispute. Released on the 1965 album Rubber Soul, it is ranked 23rd on the Rolling Stone article “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”, and placed second on CBC’s 50 Tracks. Mojo magazine named it the best song of all time in 2000.

According to Lennon, the song’s origins can be found when English journalist Kenneth Allsop made a remark that Lennon should write songs about his childhood. Afterwards, Lennon wrote a song in the form of a long poem reminiscing on his childhood years. The original version of the lyrics was based on a bus route he used to take in Liverpool, naming various sites seen along the way, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Field.

The song was recorded on 18 October 1965, and was complete except for the instrumental bridge. At that time, Lennon had not decided what instrument to use, but he subsequently asked George Martin to play a piano solo, suggesting “something Baroque-sounding”. Martin wrote a Bach-influenced piece that he found he could not play at the song’s tempo. On 22 October, the solo was recorded at half-tempo (one octave lower) and tape speed was doubled for the final recording, solving the performance challenge and giving the piano solo a unique, harpsichord-like timbre.

One of the best examples of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison’s harmonizing, Because.

The song begins with electric harpsichord played by George Martin and then joined by Lennon’s guitar doubling the harpsichord and played through a Leslie speaker. Vocals and bass guitar enter in what Alan Pollack calls the “mini-bridge.”

The song was one of the few Beatles songs to include an analog synthesizer arrangement (although analog keyboards such as the Mellotron had been used often by The Beatles, few songs featured the use of a traditional analog synthesizer with voltage-controlled oscillators). The Beatles at the time of Abbey Road were among the first contemporary rock bands to experiment with the Moog synthesizer (the first, or at least the first to chart on the top 40, had been The Monkees).

According to Lennon, “Because” was inspired by Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”. “Yoko was playing Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’ on the piano … I said, ‘Can you play those chords backwards?’, and wrote ‘Because’ around them. The lyrics speak for themselves … No imagery, no obscure references.”

The main recording session for “Because” was on 1 August 1969, with vocal overdubs on 4 August, and a Moog synthesizer overdub by George Harrison on 5 August. As a result, this was the last song on the album to be committed to tape, although there were still overdubs for other incomplete songs.

A vocals-only version of the song can be found on Anthology 3 and Love and is an example of three part harmony from Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, although the latter is slowed down and includes quiet nature sound effects. Both versions include the ‘Ahh’ at the beginning. This song appears in the movie “American Beauty” where it is dramatically placed right after the last words of the film.

The Byrds SECOND time on TV, EVER!

The band made their televison debut just three days before this broadcast, 5/8/65 on “Shivaree”.

This is a very interesting video for many reasons.

First, Gene Clark is on a Fender Xll 12 string guitar (As opposed to Tambourine), Gene & David’s vocal mics are not in the mix until the second chorus.

AND; the coolest anecdote of all:

If you listen carefully, you can hear Gene Clark’s barritone vocal part in the second chorus during “In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come following you”.

This part was NOT on the record; reason being is that Gene’s vocals were on the same track as Leon Russell’s electric piano, which was taken out of the mix.

The vocals here are LIVE, while the music is the recorded backing track.

Another noteworthy point; Roger McGuinn isn’t even pretending to “Sinc” his guitar part correctly, by playing his famous “Scruggsy picking style”, but rather strumming in earnest.

“Hotel California” was the title song from the 1976 album of the same name by the American rock band The Eagles and was released as a single in February 1977. It is one of the best-known songs of the album-oriented rock era. Writing credits for the song are shared by Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. The original recording of the song features Henley singing the lead vocals and concludes with an extended section of electric guitar interplay between Felder and Joe Walsh. “Hotel California” topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for one week in May 1977. Three months after its release, the single was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America representing 1,000,000 records shipped. The Eagles also won the 1977 Grammy Award for Record of the Year for “Hotel California” at the 20th Annual Grammy Awards in 1978. In 2009, the song “Hotel California” was certified Platinum (Digital Sales Award) by the RIAA for sales of 1,000,000 digital downloads. The song is rated highly in many rock music lists and polls. Rolling Stone magazine, for example, placed it as the 49th greatest song of all time. It is also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The song’s guitar solo is ranked 8th on Guitar Magazine’s Top 100 Guitar Solos. As one of the group’s most popular and well-known songs, “Hotel California” has been a concert staple for the band since its release. “Hotel California” was an album released by The Eagles in December 1976. It is the first Eagles album without founding member Bernie Leadon and the first album with Joe Walsh. It is also the last album featuring original bass player and singer Randy Meisner. “Hotel California” was The Eagles’ fifth album of original material and became a critical success and a major commercial hit. Since its release, it has sold over 16 million copies in the U.S. alone. The album was at #1 for eight weeks in early 1977 (non-consecutively). The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1971 by Glenn Frey (born November 6, 1948), Don Henley (born July 22, 1947), Bernie Leadon (born July 19, 1947) and Randy Meisner (born March 8, 1946). The band’s membership over the years has also included Don Felder (born September 21, 1947), Timothy B. Schmit (born October 30, 1947) and Joe Walsh (born November 20, 1947).
