Hetfield has been a major endorser of ESP guitars since 1991, and is best known for playing custom-made Explorer-style guitars with an EMG 81/EMG 60 set for pickups. His popularization of the models was considered by some to be a catalyst in Gibson’s decision to sue ESP over loss of profits (Gibson originated the model in the late 1950s and has allowed other companies to build replicas). Hetfield’s main guitar from the early days was a white Flying V, used almost exclusively until it broke in 1987. After that he used a 1984 white Gibson Explorer bearing Metallica “Jump In The Fire” devil custom artwork as well as the words “EET FUK” and an ’85 White Gibson Explorer. In 1988 he switched to using white and black ESP Explorer models.

During the mid-1990s, James Hetfield also used his two signature ESP Flying V models, one with red flames and one with green flames. He also asked a friend to fix black and silver diamond-plated metal onto the surface of some of his ESP Explorer guitars.

Recently Hetfield has become a frequent user of a Gibson Les Paul Custom, particularly the 1973 model.

James Hetfield is a true-blue guitar tinkerer, whose experiments, placements of stickers and modifications have resulted in the production of signature models by ESP guitars. He bought a black ESP ltd Viper baritone 300, installed an EMG Afterburner booster circuit, and asked a friend of his to paint green flames on it. This resulted in the limited edition “The Grynch” model guitar. He splashed some Killrust grey paint on an ESP Eclipse model guitar, installed EMG 81 & 60 pickups, moved the toggle switch to a lower position- which resulted in the signature model ESP “Truckster” guitar.

He also uses a two custom-made Explorer model guitars, built by bass luthier Ken Lawrence. Occasionally, James will use Kirk’s electric guitars in the studio, in particular his Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters, as well as his Tom Anderson ProAmm (which was used for the clean guitar intro of “Enter Sandman”).

* ESP M-II “Zorlac”. This was the starting line for the whole KH series. It features veritcal skull & crossbones opposed to the horizontal ones featured on todays KH’s, and an upside down Jackson Guitars style headstock which is what Kirk originaly intended. However, Jackson Guitars was not thrilled about this, and threatened law suits if this model ever hit stores. So the headstock was changed to a typical ESP but flipped upside down. Picture Picture

Kirk Hammett’s first guitar was a cheap Montgomery Strat copy. The pickups had gold aluminum foil on them, and there wasn’t even a name on the headstock.

Metallica’s “St. Anger” DVD rehearsals features a new guitar which has “Invisible Kid” written on it, which he uses in the song “Invisible Kid”

After a series of legal battles with Danzig, Only and Doyle regained the rights to record and perform as the Misfits. They formed a new version of the band in 1995 with singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr. Chud. This incarnation of the Misfits had a sound much more rooted in heavy metal and released the albums American Psycho (1997) and Famous Monsters (1999) before dissolving in 2000. Only then took over lead vocals and recruited former Black Flag guitarist Dez Cadena and former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone for a Misfits 25th Anniversary tour. This lineup released an album of cover songs entitled Project 1950 and toured for several years. In 2005 Ramone was replaced by Robo, who had played with Black Flag in the early 1980s and had also previously been the Misfits’ drummer from 1982 to 1983. The current lineup of Only, Cadena, and Robo continues to tour and has announced plans to record an album of new material.

The Misfits were formed in January 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey by Glenn Danzig, who had previous experience performing in local bands. Naming the band after actress Marilyn Monroe’s final film The Misfits (1961), Danzig recruited guitarist Jimmy Battle, bassist Diane DiPiazza, and drummer Manny Martínez to fill out the lineup while Danzig himself sang and played the electric piano. Both Battle and DiPiazza left the band after a month of practices. Martínez recommended his friend Jerry Caiafa to Danzig as a replacement, as Caiafa had recently received a bass guitar as a Christmas gift. Caiafa was accepted into the band despite having only been practicing his instrument for two months. He and Danzig would remain the only consistent members of the Misfits until the group disbanded in 1983. The trio of Danzig, Martínez, and Caiafa rehearsed for three months without a guitarist, using Danzig’s electric piano to provide the songs’ rhythm. They recorded the band’s first single, “Cough/Cool”, which they released through their own label Blank Records in August 1977. Caiafa’s surname was misspelled on the record’s sleeve, prompting him to insist that in the future he be credited as “Jerry, only Jerry”. “Jerry Only” quickly became his pseudonym, which he would continue to use for the rest of his career. The band played their first two performances at CBGB in New York City, followed by other local performances over the following two months.

In August 1977 guitarist Frank Licata joined the band under the pseudonym Franché Coma. The addition of a permanent guitar player allowed Danzig to phase out the electric piano and focus on singing, and pushed the band’s sound in a punk rock direction. Danzig and Only ejected Martínez from the band in December, judging him to be unreliable, and replaced him with “Mr. Jim” Catania. The band found themselves with a recording opportunity when Mercury Records wished to use the name Blank Records for one of its subdivisions and offered Danzig thirty hours of free studio time in exchange for the trademark to the name. Danzig accepted, and in January 1978 the Misfits entered a New York recording studio to record their first album. Seventeen songs were recorded, fourteen of which were mixed for the proposed Static Age album. However, the band were unable to find a record label interested in releasing the album. Instead they released four of the songs in June 1978 as the “Bullet” single on their new label Plan 9 Records, named after the 1959 science fiction horror film Plan 9 from Outer Space. Static Age would not be released in its entirety until 1997.

The theme of the song is that of a man who has been sentenced to execution in the electric chair. He opens by acknowledging his guilt (“guilty as ‘charged’”), but still questions who made the judge “God to say” that he should die. Later on the man starts to feel the fear while the execution is prepared and asks himself what he is doing in the electric chair. By the end of the song he just wants to get it over with.

It is speculated that the song is based on a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone written by Charles Beaumont entitled “Shadow Play”. The episode begins in a courtroom, where Adam Grant (Dennis Weaver) is convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to the electric chair. Shouting, “It’s happening all over again!”, Grant insists that his trial, conviction, and execution are all part of a recurring nightmare, and that when he dies, the world around him and all its occupants will likewise cease to exist.

In a live recording from 1983, James Hetfield states that “This one is dedicated to our friend in Georgia”, leading to the possibility that it is about an actual person as opposed to fictional events.

In an interview with Guitar World magazine, James Hetfield has stated that the song is not an indictment of the death penalty, in which he is a believer, but simply an exploration of the concept of being in a terrible situation with no control.
