“Hotel California” is the title song from the Eagles’ album of the same name and was released as a single in early 1977. It is one of the best-known songs of the album-oriented rock era. Writing credits for the song are shared by Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. The Eagles’ original recording of the song features Henley singing the lead vocals and concludes with an extended section of electric guitar interplay between Felder and Joe Walsh.

History and recognition;

“Hotel California” topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for one week in May 1977. Three months after its release, the single was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America representing 1,000,000 records shipped. The Eagles also won the 1977 Grammy Award for Record of the Year for “Hotel California” at the 20th Annual Grammy Awards in 1978.

In 2009, the song “Hotel California” was certified Platinum (Digital Sales Award) by the RIAA for sales of 1,000,000 digital downloads.

The song is rated highly in many rock music lists and polls. Rolling Stone magazine, for example, placed it as the 49th greatest song of all time. It is also one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The song’s guitar solo is ranked 8th on Guitar Magazine’s Top 100 Guitar Solos.

As one of the group’s most popular and well-known songs, “Hotel California” has been a concert staple for the band since its release; performances of the song appear on the Eagles’ 1980 live album and, in an acoustic version, on the 1994 Freezes Over reunion concert CD and video release. The “Hell Freezes Over” version is performed using eight guitars in total, and has a decidedly Spanish feel to it – with Don Felder playing a flamenco-inspired intro. During the band’s Farewell 1 Tour-Live from Melbourne the song was performed in a manner closer to the original album version, but with a trumpet interlude in the beginning.

The song is a playable track on the video game Guitar Hero World Tour.

Hotel California is an example of very few songs using most of the chords of a minor scale. It is in Bm scale and the chord progressions are: Bm/F#7/Asus2/E9, G/D/Em7/F#7 for the intro and G/D/F#7/Bm, G/D/Em7/F#7 for the chorus. As functional analysis the chords are

Glenn Frey described the origins of the song:

The song began as a demo tape, an instrumental by Don Felder. He’d been submitting tapes and song ideas to us since he’d joined the band, always instrumentals, since he didn’t sing. But this particular demo, unlike many of the others, had room for singing. It immediately got our attention. The first working title, the name we gave it, was ‘Mexican Reggae”.

“Party Like a Rockstar” is a rap song recorded by Shop Boyz. It was released as the first single from their debut album Rockstar Mentality (2007). It reached high success during summer 2007 and was successful in the United States, peaking in the top five on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot Rap Tracks, and Hot 100 charts.

The remix features Lil Wayne, Jim Jones and Chamillionaire with more guitar riffs included. Jim Jones’ verse didn’t make it to iTunes’ remix, although Lil Wayne’s verse and Chamillionaire’s verse did. Another unofficial remix has been produced by Lil Jon and the Swedish composer Jay Orpin, who also wrote the first remix, but had Lil’ Jon make changes for the beat for this remix. That remix has been unofficially called the Orpinz Old Duff WWE Remix because some feel it resembles a professional wrestlers entrance music. There is also a freestyle version by J. R. Writer of Dipset as well as a remix by Trina and another one by rapper Bow Wow.

Cristal Athena Steverson from VH1’s “Flavor of Love” and Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School appear in the song’s music video.

The song gained some airplay in the UK on BBC Radio 1, and was added to the B-List on its playlist.

The Trooper is a song written by Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris. It is Iron Maiden’s ninth single, and the second from their 1983 album Piece of Mind. The single was released on June 20, 1983. The song is about the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean War, and is at least partially based upon Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, taking the viewpoint of one of the slain troopers, who, in the coverart, is perceived as a bald Eddie. It is known for the galloping triplet sound of its bass and electric guitar, as well as its catchy and memorable riff, and is a crowd favourite at concerts.

The theme of the song is that of a man who has been sentenced to execution in the electric chair. He opens by acknowledging his guilt (”guilty as ‘charged’”), but still questions who made the judge “God to say” that he should die. Later on the man starts to feel the fear while the execution is prepared and asks himself what he is doing in the electric chair. By the end of the song he just wants to get it over with.

It is speculated that the song is based on a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone written by Charles Beaumont entitled “Shadow Play”. The episode begins in a courtroom, where Adam Grant (Dennis Weaver) is convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to the electric chair. Shouting, “It’s happening all over again!”, Grant insists that his trial, conviction, and execution are all part of a recurring nightmare, and that when he dies, the world around him and all its occupants will likewise cease to exist.

In a live recording from 1983, James Hetfield states that “This one is dedicated to our friend in Georgia”, leading to the possibility that it is about an actual person as opposed to fictional events.

In an interview with Guitar World magazine, James Hetfield has stated that the song is not an indictment of the death penalty, in which he is a believer, but simply an exploration of the concept of being in a terrible situation with no control.
